The Bird Wrasse (Gomphosus varius) is a distinctive species of marine wrasse belonging to the family Labridae, native to tropical reefs across the Indo-Pacific.

Distribution and Habitat

Widespread across the Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Hawaiian Islands, inhabiting shallow coral reefs and lagoons at depths of 1 to 30 meters.

Physical Description

Features an elongated snout like a bird’s beak used to probe crevices for prey. Adults exhibit pronounced sexual dimorphism, with vibrant green males and brown and white females, and mature males develop a long caudal fin.

Diet and Feeding

Carnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans and invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, it readily accepts frozen and prepared foods including mysis shrimp, chopped krill, and high-quality marine pellets.

Behavior and Reproduction

Protogynous hermaphrodites where females can change to males. They are active swimmers that need open space and may jump from uncovered aquariums.

Aquarium Care

Requires 75+ gallons with a tight-fitting lid to prevent escape. Semi-aggressive and not reef-safe with small invertebrates, it may bury in sand at night to sleep.
