The Zebra Moray Eel (Gymnomuraena zebra) is a species of moray eel found in the Indo-Pacific. It is known for its distinctive zebra-like striped pattern and is one of the more peaceful moray eel species.

Distribution and Habitat

The Zebra Moray Eel is found in the Indo-Pacific region from the Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and the Marquesas. It inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas at depths of 2 to 40 meters.

Physical Description

The Zebra Moray Eel reaches a maximum length of approximately 150 cm (59 in) though it is more commonly around 90 cm. It has a distinctive pattern of black and white vertical stripes resembling a zebra pattern, giving the species its common name. The body is elongated and muscular. It has blunt teeth ideal for its diet of crustaceans, a trait it shares with the snowflake moray.

Diet and Feeding

The Zebra Moray Eel is carnivorous, feeding primarily on crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp. It has blunt teeth adapted for crushing hard-shelled prey. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including frozen shrimp, crab, squid, and other meaty foods.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is one of the more peaceful moray eels. It is generally solitary and nocturnal. It is less aggressive than many other moray species.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 75 gallons with a tight-fitting lid. It needs abundant live rock with crevices and caves. It is more peaceful than most moray eels and can be kept with larger fish. It is considered reef-safe with caution as it primarily eats crustaceans.
