The Tessalata Eel (Gymnothorax sp.), also known as the Tessellated Moray Eel, is a large species of moray eel found in the Indo-Pacific. It is known for its distinctive pattern and large adult size.
Distribution and Habitat
The Tessalata Eel is found in the Indo-Pacific region. It inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas at various depths, typically hiding in crevices and caves during the day.
Physical Description
The Tessalata Eel can reach a maximum length of approximately 180 cm (71 in). It has a distinctive tessellated or mosaic-like pattern of dark brown to black markings on a lighter background. The body is elongated and muscular typical of moray eels.
Diet and Feeding
The Tessalata Eel is carnivorous, feeding on fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including frozen silversides, shrimp, squid, and other meaty foods.
Behavior and Reproduction
This species is generally solitary and nocturnal. It is an aggressive predator. Moray eels have pharyngeal jaws, a second set of jaws located in the throat.
Aquarium Care
Due to its large adult size it requires a tank of at least 125 gallons with a tight-fitting lid. It needs abundant live rock with large crevices and caves. It is aggressive and should be kept only with large tankmates. It is not considered reef-safe as it will eat small fish and invertebrates.
Conservation Status
Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
