The Red Finger Gorgonian (Diodogorgia sp.) is indigenous to the warm tropical and subtropical waters of the Western Atlantic Ocean, spanning the Caribbean Sea, Florida, the Bahamas, and the coastal waters of northern South America. In its natural marine biotope, this spectacular non-photosynthetic octocoral colonizes deep reef escarpments, shaded overhangs, marine caves, and vertical wall drop-offs at depths typically between 12 and 40 meters. It thrives in high-flow channels where vigorous oceanic currents continuously transport rich suspensions of micro-plankton.

Physical Description

Diodogorgia sp. develops an attractive digitate branching architecture featuring rounded, finger-like stems supported by an internal gorgonin rod surrounded by calcified spicules. This color morph exhibits an intense scarlet red, crimson, or deep coral-red coenenchyme tissue. From this vivid red background emerge contrasting pure white, translucent eight-tentacled polyps. When fully extended during feeding periods, the contrasting white polyps against the brilliant red branches create an astonishing visual display of marine beauty.

Diet and Feeding

Lacking photosynthetic zooxanthellae, the Red Finger Gorgonian is an obligate suspension feeder that relies 100% on external nutrient capture from the water column. In closed marine aquariums, the aquarist must provide consistent and diverse micro-particulate foods, including rotifers, marine micro-phytoplankton, copepod nauplii, finely pulverized seafood, and liquid invertebrate foods. Feeding several times daily or employing continuous automated dosing setups is essential to prevent tissue starvation and branch loss.

Behavior and Reproduction

This octocoral is entirely peaceful and possesses no aggressive stinging tentacles or sweeper structures, making it completely harmless to surrounding reef inhabitants. It periodically secretes and sheds a thin waxy mucus sheath to clear its branches of settled detritus and epiphytic algae. Reproduction occurs asexually through vegetative growth and fragment cutting, as well as sexually via broadcast spawning events that release gametes into open ocean currents.

Aquarium Care

Best suited for experienced reefkeepers with specialized NPS setups, the Red Finger Gorgonian requires strong, turbulent water flow to facilitate feeding and clear mucus sheds. Positioning the coral in a high flow area with low to moderate indirect lighting prevents nuisance algae and cyanobacteria from suffocating the branch tissue. Water parameters should be kept pristine with salinity at 1.024 to 1.026, temperature between 73 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit, and robust nutrient export mechanisms.

Conservation Status

Red Finger Gorgonian populations are widely distributed across Caribbean marine environments and currently maintain stable numbers in the wild. Marine resource agencies oversee collection to maintain ecological balance on reefs. Dedicated aquarium culture and ethical sourcing support conservation of this stunning non-photosynthetic species. Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
