Distribution and Habitat

The Yellow Finger Gorgonian (Diodogorgia sp.) is native to the tropical and subtropical marine waters of the Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea, the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, and the Gulf of Mexico. In its natural marine biotope, this beautiful non-photosynthetic octocoral inhabits deep reef drop-offs, cavern ceilings, shaded vertical walls, and under-ledge environments at depths ranging between 10 and 45 meters. It establishes colonies in areas subjected to strong tidal flow and minimal direct sunlight where currents bring continuous planktonic nourishment.

Physical Description

Diodogorgia sp. forms a stunning arborescent branching structure with smooth, finger-like cylindrical stems constructed of a flexible protein core embedded with calcite sclerites. The coenenchyme tissue displays a brilliant canary yellow or golden orange coloration. When feeding, the coral extends hundreds of translucent, pure white or cream-colored polyps, each bearing eight finely pinnate tentacles. The striking contrast between bright yellow branches and snow-white polyps makes it an exceptionally eye-catching ornamental species.

Diet and Feeding

As an obligate non-photosynthetic (NPS) gorgonian, the Yellow Finger Gorgonian possesses no symbiotic zooxanthellae and relies entirely upon heterotrophic suspension feeding. In an aquarium setting, it requires regular, frequent feedings of microscopic foods such as live or concentrated phytoplankton, rotifers, copepod nauplii, oyster feast, cyclops, and dissolved marine amino acids. Automated continuous drip feeding or multiple daily target feedings are crucial for maintaining tissue fullness and preventing branch recession.

Behavior and Reproduction

The Yellow Finger Gorgonian is completely peaceful and devoid of defensive stinging nematocyst batteries, posing zero threat to other reef dwellers. However, it produces a protective mucus tunic that it periodically sloughs off to rid its branches of settling sediment and microalgae. Asexual propagation occurs through manual branch fragmentation, while sexual reproduction in the wild occurs through broadcast spawning of gametes and subsequent larval settlement onto hard substrates.

Aquarium Care

Maintaining Diodogorgia sp. requires expert reef husbandry skills and a dedicated NPS or high-nutrient aquarium system. Placement in a high flow area with strong, turbulent water current is mandatory to deliver plankton and assist in shedding the mucus tunic. Low to moderate lighting is recommended to prevent nuisance microalgae from encrusting the branches. Water chemistry should remain stable with salinity at 1.024 to 1.026, temperature at 73 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit, and strong filtration to process heavy feeding.

Conservation Status

Yellow Finger Gorgonians remain widespread and relatively common across their native Caribbean reef habitats. Sustainable management and commercial collection guidelines ensure wild harvest does not deplete natural stocks. Captive propagation among advanced reef hobbyists helps further our understanding of non-photosynthetic coral husbandry. Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
