The Purple Gorgonian (Gorgonian sp.) is distributed throughout the tropical marine waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas, the Florida reef tract, and parts of the tropical Indo-Pacific. In its native coral reef biotope, this magnificent octocoral inhabits outer reef slopes, high-energy surge channels, deep drop-offs, and shaded overhangs at depths between 8 and 35 meters. It anchors firmly to limestone rockwork and dead coral structures, extending its fan-like branches into prevailing oceanic currents to capture passing planktonic food.

Physical Description

Gorgonian sp. features a graceful planar or bushy branching fan morphology supported by a sturdy yet flexible central skeleton made of gorgonin protein and embedded mineral spicules. The outer branch tissue exhibits an exquisite royal purple, lavender, or deep violet hue. When polyps open, thousands of delicate, contrasting white, cream, or pale yellow octocoral polyps expand from individual calyces, giving the colony an intricate, feathery appearance that moves elegantly with the surrounding water flow.

Diet and Feeding

Depending on the exact gorgonian variety, nutrition is derived either through a combination of symbiotic zooxanthellae photosynthesis and plankton capture, or purely via heterotrophic filter feeding. Providing regular supplemental feedings of enriched rotifers, copepod nauplii, marine phytoplankton blends, oyster eggs, and micro-encapsulated invertebrate foods ensures optimal polyp health, promotes tissue growth, and maintains radiant violet coloration across all branches.

Behavior and Reproduction

The Purple Gorgonian exhibits a completely peaceful temperament, lacking aggressive sweeper tentacles or harmful chemical toxins that could injure neighboring sessile invertebrates. However, it is susceptible to being overgrown by fast-growing filamentous algae or stung by aggressive stony corals placed too close. Colony reproduction occurs asexually through branch fragmentation and basal spreading, while sexual reproduction involves the release of gametes during synchronized spawning events.

Aquarium Care

Providing proper care for the Purple Gorgonian requires strong, turbulent water movement to keep the colony free from detritus and microalgae. It should be situated in a high flow area of the aquarium. Moderate lighting supports photosynthetic varieties while preventing algae fouling. Ideal water chemistry includes salinity of 1.024 to 1.026, water temperature at 74 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit, alkalinity between 8 and 11 dKH, and calcium maintained at 400 to 450 ppm.

Purple Gorgonian sea fans are vital structural components of tropical reef biomes, offering shelter and micro-habitats for numerous marine organisms. Natural populations are safeguarded under international marine harvest regulations and regional management plans.
