The Twin Spot Coris Wrasse (Coris aygula), also known as the Clown Coris, is an impressive marine fish belonging to the family Labridae.

Distribution and Habitat

Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Line Islands, found on outer reef slopes and sandy patches near coral heads.

Physical Description

Juveniles are orange with white spots and black dorsal ocelli, while adults transform into massive dark gray fish with twin dark spots on the dorsal area and a prominent forehead bump.

Diet and Feeding

Carnivorous, feeds on hard-shelled crustaceans, sea urchins, and mollusks using powerful crushing jaws.

Behavior and Reproduction

Protogynous hermaphrodites and a very large growing species that buries in deep sand when resting or frightened.

Aquarium Care

Requires 180+ gallons with a deep sand bed and a secure tight lid. Due to its enormous adult size, it is not suitable for most standard home aquariums.

Conservation Status

Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
