The Scissortail Goby (Ptereleotris evides), also known as the Blackfin Dartfish, is a species of dartfish native to the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean.

Distribution and Habitat

The Scissortail Goby is native to the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean. It is a reef inhabitant and can be found at depths of 2 to 15 meters.

Physical Description

The Scissortail Goby can reach 14 cm (5.5 in) in total length. It has an elongated body with a distinctive forked tail that resembles a pair of scissors. The body is generally light blue to gray with darker markings on the fins.

Diet and Feeding

This species feeds on zooplankton and small invertebrates in the water column. In captivity it accepts brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and prepared foods.

Behavior and Reproduction

The Scissortail Goby is peaceful and is often found in small groups in the wild. It hovers in the water column above the substrate and will dart into burrows when threatened.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 30 gallons with a sandy substrate and plenty of live rock for hiding. It is peaceful and reef-safe. It should be kept with peaceful tankmates and may be kept in small groups.
