The Golden Head Sleeper Goby (Valenciennea strigata), also known as the Blueband Goby or Pennant Glider, is a species of fish in the family Gobiidae. It is native to the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean.

Distribution and Habitat

The Golden Head Sleeper Goby is found in the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean. It can be found in outer lagoons and the seaward side of reefs. It occurs in a variety of substrates including sand, rubble, and hard bottoms at depths of 1 to 25 meters, usually at less than 6 meters. It primarily inhabits burrows dug under rubble.

Physical Description

This species can reach a length of 18 cm (7.1 in). It has a distinctive golden-yellow head with a blue band running beneath the eye. The body is white to pale gray with subtle markings.

Diet and Feeding

The Golden Head Sleeper Goby feeds by sifting sand through its mouth to extract small invertebrates and organic matter. In captivity it accepts brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and prepared foods.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is monogamous and is usually found in pairs. It burrows under rubble and uses the burrows as both a nesting site and a refuge from predators. Burrows typically have two entrances.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 30 gallons with a deep sand bed for burrowing and plenty of rubble. It is peaceful and reef-safe. It should be kept with peaceful tankmates.
