The Bullet Goby (Amblygobius phalaena), also known as the Sleeper Banded Goby or White-barred Goby, is a species of goby native to tropical reefs of the western Pacific Ocean.

Distribution and Habitat

The Bullet Goby is native to tropical reefs of the western Pacific Ocean and the central Indo-Pacific at depths of 2 to 20 meters. It inhabits sandy substrates on reef flats and lagoons.

Physical Description

The Bullet Goby can reach a length of 15 cm (5.9 in). It has an elongated body with white to pale coloration and distinctive dark bars running vertically along the body. The fins are translucent with subtle markings.

Diet and Feeding

This species feeds by taking in mouthfuls of sand and sifting out algae, invertebrates, and other organic matter. In captivity it should be offered a varied diet of brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and prepared foods.

Behavior and Reproduction

The Bullet Goby is peaceful and spends much of its time near the substrate. It is known to burrow and will sift sand continuously in search of food.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 30 gallons with a deep sand bed for sifting and burrowing. It is peaceful and reef-safe. It should be kept with peaceful tankmates and provided plenty of live rock.
