The Wolf Eel (Congrogadus subducens) is a species of fish in the family Pseudochromidae. Despite its common name it is not a true eel but an elongated fish that resembles one.

Distribution and Habitat

The Wolf Eel is found in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Andaman Sea to northern Australia and the Solomon Islands. It inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas at depths of 1 to 20 meters.

Physical Description

The Wolf Eel reaches a maximum length of approximately 40 cm (15.7 in). It has an elongated eel-like body with a mottled brown and green coloration. The body is covered with small scales and has a pattern that provides camouflage among rocks and coral.

Diet and Feeding

The Wolf Eel is carnivorous, feeding on small fish and crustaceans. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including frozen silversides, shrimp, and other meaty foods.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is semi-aggressive and territorial. It is generally solitary and hides in crevices. It is an aggressive predator toward small tankmates.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 55 gallons with a tight-fitting lid. It needs abundant live rock with crevices and caves. It is semi-aggressive and should be kept with similarly sized or larger tankmates. It is not considered reef-safe as it will eat small fish and invertebrates.
