The Foxface (Siganus vulpinus), also known as the Foxface Rabbitfish or Common Foxface, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Siganidae. It is one of the most popular marine aquarium fish.

Distribution and Habitat

The Foxface is found in the Indo-Pacific region. It has been recorded as deep as 30 meters. This species lives in lagoons and seaward reefs where there is a rich growth of corals.

Physical Description

The Foxface reaches a maximum length of approximately 25 cm (9.8 in). It has a distinctive fox-like face with a elongated snout. The body is bright yellow with a white to silver chest and a black and white pattern on the face. The body coloration can change dramatically when stressed or at night to a dark mottled pattern.

Diet and Feeding

The Foxface is primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae. Juveniles and subadults may form large schools feeding on algae growing on the bases of Acropora corals. In captivity it should be fed a diet rich in marine algae, spirulina, and plant-based foods.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is peaceful and generally non-aggressive. Juveniles may form large schools. This species produces venom in the spines of its fins as a defense mechanism.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 75 gallons with ample swimming space and abundant live rock for grazing. It is generally considered reef-safe. It is peaceful and can be kept with a variety of tankmates. Handle with care as the dorsal spines are venomous.
