The Cuban Hogfish (Bodianus pulchellus), also known as the Spotfin Hogfish, is a species of wrasse native to the Atlantic Ocean.

Distribution and Habitat

The Cuban Hogfish is mainly found from North Carolina to Brazil, through the Caribbean. It has also been recorded from Sao Tome off the coast of West Africa. It inhabits reefs, both rock and coral, where it occurs at depths of 15 to 120 meters, though rarely deeper than 24 meters.

Physical Description

Juveniles are bright yellow with a large black blotch covering the first 4 spines of the dorsal fin. Adults are very different. The head, body and the pelvic, anal and front of the dorsal fins are deep red. The rear of the dorsal fin, the upper part of the caudal peduncle and the upper caudal fin edge are bright yellow. There is an indistinct white stripe extending from the mouth to mid-body. This species can reach a length of 28.5 cm (11.2 in), though most do not exceed 18 cm (7.1 in).

Diet and Feeding

The Cuban Hogfish feeds on benthic invertebrates including crustaceans and molluscs. In captivity it should be fed a variety of meaty foods including shrimp, crab, and prepared foods.

Behavior and Reproduction

The juveniles of this species act as cleaner fish. This species is of minor importance to local commercial fisheries and can be found in the aquarium trade.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 75 gallons with plenty of live rock and hiding spots. It is semi-aggressive and should be kept with similarly sized or larger tankmates. It may eat small invertebrates and should not be housed with very small peaceful species.

Conservation Status

Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
