The Bat Ray (Myliobatis californica) is a large eagle ray belonging to the family Myliobatidae. Native to the coastal waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean, this distinctive elasmobranch is recognized by its broad pectoral disc, bat-like profile, and prominent bulbous head. It plays a vital ecological role as a top benthic predator in temperate and subtropical shallow marine ecosystems.

Distribution and Habitat

The Bat Ray is distributed along the eastern Pacific coast from Oregon southward to the Gulf of California and the Galápagos Islands. It inhabits shallow coastal waters, bays, estuaries, kelp forests, and sandy or muddy flats from the intertidal zone down to depths of 100 meters. During warmer months, it frequently enters shallow sloughs and protected lagoons to forage and reproduce before migrating to deeper offshore waters during the winter season.

Physical Description

The Bat Ray reaches a maximum disc width of 180 cm (71 inches) and can weigh up to 90 kilograms. The body features broad, triangular pectoral fins that flap gracefully like wings during locomotion. Its elevated head is rounded with prominent, high-set eyes and distinct spiracles behind them. The dorsal surface is dark brown, olive, or solid black, while the ventral surface is stark white with dark disc margins. A long, whip-like tail extends behind the disc, bearing a small dorsal fin and one or more venomous barbed spines at its base. The jaws contain flattened pavement-like tooth plates specifically designed for crushing tough-shelled benthic organisms.

Diet and Feeding

In the wild, the Bat Ray is a specialized benthic carnivore feeding primarily on hard-shelled mollusks, crustaceans, and polychaete worms. Its preferred diet includes clams, oysters, abalone, snails, crabs, and mantis shrimp. It uses its heavy snout and rhythmic pectoral fin beats to dig deep craters in the sand, dislodging burrowed prey before crushing them with its powerful dental plates. In captivity, it readily accepts whole clams, squid, raw shrimp, silversides, and chopped marine fish.

Behavior and Reproduction

The Bat Ray is a gregarious species often observed swimming in large aggregations, particularly during seasonal migrations and mating events. It exhibits aplacental viviparity (ovoviviparity), where developing embryos receive nutrition from a yolk sac supplemented by nutrient-rich uterine histotroph secreted by the mother. Following a gestation period of nine to twelve months, females give birth to litters of two to ten live pups, each born with flexible venomous barbs safely encased in a protective sheath.

Aquarium Care

Due to its massive adult size, high activity levels, and powerful swimming habits, the Bat Ray is suited exclusively for public aquariums or mega-scale private installations exceeding several thousand gallons. The enclosure must provide smooth, rounded corners, a deep bed of fine sugar-grade sand, and open swimming space free of jagged rockwork that could scrape its delicate disc. Water temperature must be maintained within the temperate range of 59-72°F (15-22°C) with efficient biological filtration and strong aeration. It is not reef safe, as it will disrupt rockwork and consume ornamental invertebrates.

Conservation Status

Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List. Bat Ray populations remain robust and stable throughout their native range along the Pacific coast of North America, benefiting from well-managed coastal fisheries and lack of targeted commercial exploitation.
