The Diamond Goby (Valenciennea puellaris), also known as the Orange-spotted Sleeper Goby or Diamond Watchman Goby, is a species of goby native to the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean.

Distribution and Habitat

The Diamond Goby inhabits lagoons and outer reefs where it occurs on sandy substrates with larger pieces of rubble to burrow under. It is found throughout the Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean.

Physical Description

The Diamond Goby can reach a length of 20 cm (7.9 in). It has a pale body with distinctive orange spots scattered across the head and body. The fins are translucent with subtle orange markings.

Diet and Feeding

Its main diet is composed of zooplankton and dead fish or invertebrates. It feeds by sifting sand through its mouth to extract food particles. In captivity it accepts brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and prepared foods.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is peaceful and spends much of its time near the substrate. It is known to burrow under rubble and will sift sand continuously in search of food.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 30 gallons with a deep sand bed for sifting and burrowing. It is peaceful and reef-safe. It should be kept with peaceful tankmates and provided plenty of live rock and rubble.
