The Magnificent Foxface (Siganus magnificus) is a striking marine reef fish belonging to the rabbitfish family Siganidae.

Distribution and Habitat

The Magnificent Foxface is found in the Eastern Indian Ocean, particularly around the Andaman Sea and the coast of Thailand. It inhabits coral reefs and rocky coastal areas at depths of 1 to 30 meters.

Physical Description

It reaches a maximum length of 24 cm and has a laterally compressed body with a striking coloration of orange, white, and black. It features a distinctive black band running through the eye and a white body with orange fins. It possesses venomous spines on the dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins.

Diet and Feeding

It is primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae and marine plant material in the wild. In captivity, it should be offered a variety of vegetable-based foods including dried algae sheets, spirulina, and herbivore preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

It is generally peaceful and can be kept in community reef tanks. It is often found in pairs or small groups in the wild. It is a pelagic spawner releasing eggs into the water column.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 75 gallons with ample swimming space and live rock for grazing. It is peaceful toward most tankmates but may be territorial toward other rabbitfish species. It is generally considered reef-safe but may nip at some soft corals. Handle with care due to venomous spines.
