The Tassle Filefish (Chaetodermis penicilligerus), also known as the Tasseled Filefish or Prickly Leatherjacket, is a species of filefish found in the Indo-Pacific. It is known for its distinctive tasseled appearance.

Distribution and Habitat

The Tassle Filefish is found in the Indo-Pacific region from East Africa to Japan and Australia. It inhabits coastal reefs, rubble areas, and seagrass beds at depths of 2 to 20 meters.

Physical Description

The Tassle Filefish reaches a maximum length of approximately 30 cm (11.8 in). It has a distinctive appearance with numerous tassel-like appendages covering its body, providing excellent camouflage among algae and rubble. The body is laterally compressed with a rough texture. Coloration ranges from brown to olive green with darker mottling.

Diet and Feeding

The Tassle Filefish is omnivorous, feeding on algae, small invertebrates, and coral polyps. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including flakes, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and frozen preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is peaceful and generally non-aggressive. It is a slow swimmer and spends much of its time drifting near the substrate or hiding among rocks and coral.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 75 gallons with abundant live rock. It is considered reef-safe with caution as it may nip at some corals. It is peaceful and can be kept with a variety of tankmates.
