The Multi-Colored Filefish (Pervagor melanocephalus), also known as the Blackheaded Filefish, is a species of filefish from the Indo-Pacific. It is known for its distinctive coloration.

Distribution and Habitat

The Multi-Colored Filefish is found in the Indo-Pacific region. It inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas at depths of 5 to 30 meters.

Physical Description

The Multi-Colored Filefish reaches a maximum length of approximately 10 cm (3.9 in). It has a distinctive coloration with a dark head and a colorful body that can include shades of orange, yellow, green, and blue. The body is laterally compressed with a rough texture typical of filefish.

Diet and Feeding

The Multi-Colored Filefish is omnivorous, feeding on algae, small invertebrates, and coral polyps. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including flakes, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and frozen preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is peaceful and generally non-aggressive. It is a slow swimmer and spends much of its time near the substrate or hiding among rocks and coral.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 30 gallons with abundant live rock. It is considered reef-safe with caution as it may nip at corals. It is peaceful and can be kept with a variety of tankmates.
