The Swissguard Basslet (Liopropoma rubre), also known as the Peppermint Bass, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Liopropomatidae. It is found in the western Atlantic Ocean and is one of the more prized basslet species in the aquarium trade.

Distribution and Habitat

The Swissguard Basslet is found in the western Atlantic Ocean, primarily in the Caribbean region. It is an uncommon species collected from deeper Atlantic reef areas, typically found at depths greater than 20 meters.

Physical Description

The Swissguard Basslet has an elongated body of red adorned with alternating horizontal stripes of yellow and red. It reaches a maximum length of approximately 10 cm (3.9 in). The striking coloration with its red body and yellow stripes makes it one of the most beautiful basslet species available.

Diet and Feeding

The Swissguard Basslet is a carnivorous species. In the wild it feeds on small crustaceans and zooplankton. In captivity it accepts mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and frozen meaty preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

The Swissguard Basslet is a solitary and secretive fish that prefers to hide among rocks and crevices. It is territorial toward similar-looking species.

Aquarium Care

The Swissguard Basslet requires a tank of at least 30 gallons with stable water conditions and abundant live rock with crevices for hiding. It is semi-aggressive and should be kept singly. It is considered reef-safe. Due to its deeper-water origins it prefers dimmer lighting. This species has been confirmed as captive bred making captive-bred specimens occasionally available.
