The Black Cap Basslet (Gramma melacara), also known as the Blackcap Gramma, is a species of fish inhabiting reefs in the tropical western Atlantic Ocean. It prefers vertical surfaces with crevices in which it can hide.

Distribution and Habitat

The Black Cap Basslet is found in the tropical western Atlantic Ocean. It can be found at depths from 10 to 180 meters, usually between 20 and 60 meters. It prefers vertical surfaces with crevices in which it can hide.

Physical Description

The Black Cap Basslet is a small fish reaching a length of 10 cm (3.9 in). It is purple with a diagonal black cap on its head. The body colour varies from magenta to purple and there is a jet-black diagonal cap running from the lip to the fore dorsal fin.

Diet and Feeding

The Black Cap Basslet is a carnivorous species that needs to be kept on a meaty diet in the aquarium. In the wild it feeds on small crustaceans and zooplankton. In captivity it accepts mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and frozen meaty preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

The Black Cap Basslet is territorial and does not accept other members of the same or similar-looking species in the same aquarium. When frightened it hides among rocks.

Aquarium Care

The Black Cap Basslet is a hardy fish that is typically peaceful and can be kept in a reef aquarium. Care should be taken to only add one fish to an aquarium as they are territorial. An aquarium of 30 gallons or larger is ideal with large amounts of live rock for hiding. Since it is commonly found in deep waters it is best to avoid sharp aquarium lights. It is considered reef compatible. The recommended water temperature is 72-78 F (22-26 C) with pH between 8.1 and 8.4.
