The Spotfin Squirrelfish (Neoniphon sp.) is a small attractive squirrelfish of the family Holocentridae, native to the tropical Indo-Pacific. Distinguished by a bold dark spot on its dorsal fin, it pairs striking red-silver colouration with a peaceful nature. Its compact size makes it popular for marine aquarists.
Distribution and Habitat
The Spotfin Squirrelfish is found across the tropical Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to the central Pacific. It inhabits coral reefs, reef flats, and lagoons, sheltering among staghorn coral and within crevices at shallow to moderate depths.
Physical Description
The Spotfin Squirrelfish has a moderately compressed body with large eyes suited to low-light conditions. Its body is silvery-red to reddish-pink with a dark spot on the rear dorsal fin. It reaches 20 cm (8 inches). Its long dorsal spines carry venomous glands.
Diet and Feeding
The Spotfin Squirrelfish is a nocturnal carnivore that feeds on small crustaceans, copepods, zooplankton, and tiny fish. It emerges at night to forage. In captivity it adapts to frozen mysid and brine shrimp and fine marine pellets.
Behavior and Reproduction
The Spotfin Squirrelfish is nocturnal and hides in coral branches and crevices by day, venturing out after dark to feed. It is generally peaceful and often forms small aggregations. Plenty of hiding places encourage confident natural behaviour.
Aquarium Care
The Spotfin Squirrelfish requires at least 55 gallons (208 L) with abundant hiding places among live rock and caves. Water temperature should be 72-78 F (22-26 C). It is reef safe and fed at night when naturally active.
Conservation Status
Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
