Distribution and Habitat

Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific, it is commonly found across lagoons and sandy reef slopes at moderate depths. In these calm zones, fine sediments protect its delicate cone-shaped base.

Physical Description

This fleshy brain coral showcases deeply folded ridges that form undulating lobes with vibrant red and green tones. During the day, its thick tissue expands outward into a puffy cushion. When fully inflated, the coral exhibits rich highlights under reef lighting.

Diet and Feeding

It obtains primary energy through symbiotic photosynthesis carried out by internal zooxanthellae. It also thrives on supplemental feedings of chopped seafood, mysis shrimp, and LPS pellets. Direct feeding once or twice weekly supports tissue puffiness.

Behavior and Reproduction

Trachyphyllia geoffroyi is a peaceful coral that expands its fleshy mantle widely during daytime illumination. In darkness, it extends short feeder tentacles around its folds to snare drifting food particles. It does not possess aggressive sweeper tentacles.

Aquarium Care

Position this coral on a soft sand bed in an area with low to moderate lighting and low water flow. Placing it on sharp rocks can tear its expanding mantle tissue. Steady calcium and alkalinity levels ensure healthy skeletal calcification.

Conservation Status

Collection from the wild is managed through export quotas to protect natural reef habitats. Wild stocks remain abundant throughout their extensive geographical range. Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
