The Purple Dottyback (Pseudochromis porphyreus), also known as the Magenta Dottyback, is a species of dottyback from the Western Pacific. It occasionally makes its way into the aquarium trade.

Distribution and Habitat

The Purple Dottyback is found in the Western Pacific region, particularly around the Admiralty Islands and Indonesia. It inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas.

Physical Description

The Purple Dottyback grows to a size of 6 cm (2.4 in) in length. It has a vibrant magenta to purple coloration throughout its entire body, making it one of the most colorful dottyback species available.

Diet and Feeding

The Purple Dottyback is carnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans and zooplankton. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and frozen meaty preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is semi-aggressive and territorial. It is a sequential hermaphrodite. It prefers to stay near the bottom of the tank and hides in crevices.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 20 gallons with abundant live rock for hiding. It is considered reef-safe. It should be kept singly as it can be aggressive toward conspecifics.

Conservation Status

Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
