The Captive-Bred Neon Dottyback (Pseudochromis aldabraensis), also known as the Orange Dottyback or Arabian Dottyback, is a species of ray-finned fish from the family Pseudochromidae.

Distribution and Habitat

The Neon Dottyback has a natural range in the western Indian Ocean around Aldabra, the Gulf of Oman, the Persian Gulf as far east as India and Sri Lanka. It occurs on offshore coral and rocky reefs as deep as 25 meters where it is a secretive species which quickly hides if disturbed.

Physical Description

The Neon Dottyback is a small fish reaching approximately 10 cm (3.9 in). It has a vibrant orange to yellow-orange coloration with distinctive blue lines running along the body.

Diet and Feeding

The Neon Dottyback is a carnivorous species. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and frozen meaty preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species can be fairly aggressive toward other fish, particularly similar-looking species. It prefers to stay at the bottom of the tank.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 30 gallons with abundant live rock for hiding. It is considered reef-safe.

Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
