The Plate Coral (Fungia sp.) is a free-living solitary large-polyp stony coral recognized for its flat circular plate shape. Unlike attached corals, adult specimens rest unattached on sandy substrate. Its unique morphology and expansive oral disc make it a classic reef aquarium favorite.

Distribution and Habitat

Widely distributed throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, it inhabits flat sandy reef floors, lagoons, and shallow rubble zones. These open sand flats provide ample space and steady water flow.

Physical Description

The coral features a flat circular calcium skeleton covered by a single fleshy polyp. Its surface displays prominent radiating septal ridges extending from a central slit-like mouth. Specimens exhibit diverse colors ranging from bright green and orange to purple.

Diet and Feeding

Zooxanthellae within its mantle tissue supply photosynthetic energy under moderate lighting. In addition, it feeds on small meaty items such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and pellets. Target feeding once a week promotes rapid tissue health.

Behavior and Reproduction

Adult plate corals can slowly maneuver across the substrate using water inflation. They also inflate their fleshy tissues to shed accumulated sand and debris from their surface. While peaceful, they should be kept separated from neighboring corals.

Aquarium Care

Place this coral on the sand bed in an area with moderate lighting and low to moderate water flow. Avoid placing it on rockwork where it could fall and suffer skeletal fractures. Maintain stable alkalinity, calcium, and low nutrient levels.

Conservation Status

Broad distribution and abundant wild numbers across the Indo-Pacific support stable populations. Collection is managed through export regulations. Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
