The Leaf Fish (Taenianotus triacanthus), also known as the Leaf Scorpionfish or Paperfish, is a small, highly specialized marine ray-finned fish in the family Scorpaenidae. Renowned among aquarists and divers for its remarkable leaf-mimicking morphology and swaying behavior, it is a master of camouflage on tropical coral reefs.

Distribution and Habitat

The Leaf Fish is widely distributed across tropical coral reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii, the Tuamotu Islands, southern Japan, and Australia. It is commonly found on shallow coral reef crests, outer reef drop-offs, surge channels, and rubble patches at depths between 1 and 130 meters, where current flow is moderate to brisk.

Physical Description

The Leaf Fish reaches a modest maximum length of 10 cm (4 inches). Its body is extremely compressed laterally, creating an ultra-thin, blade-like silhouette resembling a dead leaf. The magnificent sail-like dorsal fin originates directly above the eyes and extends across the entire length of the back. It exhibits extraordinary color variations, including pure white, vivid yellow, bright pink, red, green, brown, and mottled black. To prevent the accumulation of fouling algae and sessile invertebrates, the Leaf Fish sheds its entire outer skin every ten to fourteen days.

Diet and Feeding

A strictly carnivorous ambush predator, the Leaf Fish feeds on small live crustaceans, including marine shrimp, copepods, and small juvenile fishes. Remaining motionless, it waits for prey to pass near its mouth before rapidly extending its oversized jaws to engulf the prey in a fraction of a second. In captivity, new arrivals typically require live feeder shrimp, live ghost shrimp, or gut-loaded live brine before being patiently transitioned to thawed mysis shrimp offered on feeding tongs.

Behavior and Reproduction

The Leaf Fish is a sedentary, solitary predator that spends most of its time perched on live rock, sponges, or coral branches using its thickened pectoral fins. It rocks rhythmically from side to side, mimicking the natural motion of a dead leaf or piece of seaweed drifting in the surge. During spawning, pairs perform dusk courtship rises into the water column to release floating pelagic egg rafts containing hundreds of clear eggs.

Aquarium Care

The Leaf Fish thrives in quiet, dedicated reef aquariums of 30 gallons or larger with low-to-moderate water currents and abundant live rock perches. It is considered reef safe with caution because it will not harm corals, clams, or anemones, though it will readily consume small ornamental shrimp and nano tankmates. It must be kept with peaceful, slow-swimming tankmates that will not compete aggressively for food or nip at its delicate fins.

Conservation Status

Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List. The species enjoys a vast distribution and stable populations across healthy Indo-Pacific reef ecosystems, facing no significant conservation threats.
