The Forktail Blenny (Meiacanthus atrodorsalis) is a species of combtooth blenny from the Indo-Pacific. It is a popular aquarium fish known for its distinctive forked tail and peaceful nature.

Distribution and Habitat

The Forktail Blenny is found in the tropical Indo-Pacific region. It inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas where it seeks shelter in crevices and holes.

Physical Description

The Forktail Blenny reaches a maximum length of approximately 10 cm (3.9 in). It has an elongated body with a distinctive yellowish to whitish coloration and a dark diagonal stripe running from the eye to the caudal fin. The forked tail gives this species its common name.

Diet and Feeding

The Forktail Blenny feeds on small invertebrates and zooplankton in the water column. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and frozen preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is peaceful and can be kept with a variety of tankmates. It is considered reef-safe.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 20 gallons with abundant live rock for hiding.
