The Algae Blenny (Salarias fasciatus), also known as the Lawnmower Blenny or Jewelled Blenny, is a benthic marine fish species endemic to Australasia. Despite being known as the lawnmower blenny due to its propensity to consume algae growth in aquaria, it is principally a detritivore with plant material making up only about 15 percent of its diet.

Distribution and Habitat

The Algae Blenny is found in reefs at depths of 0 to 8 meters from East Africa and the Red Sea to Samoa and the Islands of Micronesia. It is most often found on shallow reef flats that have heavy algae cover.

Physical Description

The Algae Blenny is typically olive to brown with dark bars and a large number of round or elongated white spots of different sizes. It has many pale spots, dark streaks that run anteriorly, and several dark bands. It is a small fish reaching a maximum length of 14 cm (5.5 in). The dorsal and anal fins are attached to the base of the caudal fin by a skin membrane.

Diet and Feeding

The Algae Blenny is principally a detritivore that also consumes algae. In captivity it readily accepts a varied diet including spirulina, marine algae, and frozen preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is peaceful and generally reef-safe. It may be territorial toward other blennies.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 30 gallons with abundant live rock for grazing and perching.
