The Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish (Chrysiptera taupou), also known as the South Seas Demoiselle, is a species of damselfish native to the southwestern Pacific Ocean.

Distribution and Habitat

The Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish is found in the southwestern Pacific Ocean particularly around Fiji and Tonga. It can be found alone, in pairs, or in small groups in shallow lagoons and offshore coral reefs.

Physical Description

The Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish is an iridescent blue damselfish with a yellow lower surface and yellow fins. It has a black stripe from the snout through the eye. It reaches a maximum size of approximately 8 cm (3.1 in).

Diet and Feeding

The Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish is omnivorous feeding on zooplankton, algae, and small benthic invertebrates. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including flakes, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and frozen preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is semi-aggressive and territorial. Like other damselfish it is a sequential hermaphrodite with a size-based dominance hierarchy. Males guard and aerate the eggs.

Aquarium Care

It is extremely hardy and an active swimmer. It requires a tank of at least 20 gallons with abundant live rock for hiding. It is considered reef-safe.
