The Blue and Gold Damselfish (Pomacentrus coelestis), also known as the Neon Damselfish, is a species of damselfish in the family Pomacentridae.

Distribution and Habitat

The Blue and Gold Damselfish is found in the Indo-Pacific region. Adults inhabit lagoon and seaward reefs close to the bottom among rubble beds.

Physical Description

The Blue and Gold Damselfish is a brilliant neon blue damselfish with a yellowish tail and blue or yellow pelvic and anal fins. It reaches a maximum size of approximately 8.5 cm (3.3 in).

Diet and Feeding

The Blue and Gold Damselfish feeds on zooplankton and to a lesser extent on benthic algae. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including flakes, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and frozen preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is semi-aggressive and territorial. Like other damselfish it is a sequential hermaphrodite with a size-based dominance hierarchy. Males guard and aerate the eggs.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 20 gallons with abundant live rock for hiding. It is considered reef-safe. It should be kept singly or in established pairs.

Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
