The Garden Eel (Taenioconger hassi), also known as the Hass’s Garden Eel, is a species of conger eel that lives in colonies in sandy areas near coral reefs.

Distribution and Habitat

The Garden Eel is found in the Indo-Pacific region. It inhabits sandy areas near coral reefs at depths of 5 to 40 meters. It lives in colonies with individual eels burrowing into the sand and emerging to feed on passing plankton.

Physical Description

The Garden Eel reaches a maximum length of approximately 60 cm (24 in). It has a slender body with a white to pale yellow coloration and dark spots or blotches along its body. The head is relatively small with large eyes.

Diet and Feeding

The Garden Eel is carnivorous, feeding primarily on zooplankton that drifts past in the current. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and frozen preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

Garden eels are colonial and live in groups with their bodies protruding from the sand. They retreat into their burrows when threatened. They are peaceful and non-aggressive.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 55 gallons with a deep sandy substrate of at least 6 inches for burrowing. It is considered reef-safe. It is peaceful and can be kept in groups. It requires a well-established tank with stable water conditions.
