The Golden Banana Moray Eel (Gymnothorax miliaris), also known as the Golden Moray or Banana Eel, is a species of moray eel found in the Atlantic Ocean. It is prized for its striking golden-yellow coloration.

Distribution and Habitat

The Golden Banana Moray Eel is found in the western Atlantic Ocean from Florida and the Bahamas to Brazil. It inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas at depths of 3 to 40 meters.

Physical Description

The Golden Banana Moray Eel reaches a maximum length of approximately 70 cm (27.5 in). It has a striking golden-yellow to bright yellow coloration with dark spots or blotches scattered across the body. The body is elongated and muscular typical of moray eels.

Diet and Feeding

The Golden Banana Moray Eel is carnivorous, feeding on small fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including frozen silversides, shrimp, squid, and other meaty foods.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is generally solitary and nocturnal. It is an aggressive predator and should be kept with caution. Moray eels have pharyngeal jaws, a second set of jaws located in the throat.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 75 gallons with a tight-fitting lid as eels are escape artists. It needs abundant live rock with crevices and caves. It is aggressive and should be kept with large tankmates. It is not considered reef-safe as it may eat small fish and invertebrates.
