The Sunrise Dottyback (Pseudochromis flavivertex) is a small colorful fish species belonging to the Pseudochromidae family. It is found in the Western Pacific region and is a popular aquarium fish.

Distribution and Habitat

The Sunrise Dottyback is found in the Western Pacific region, particularly in the waters around Indonesia, the Philippines, and Palau. It occurs usually around bases of small rocks or coral heads on sandy bottoms.

Physical Description

The Sunrise Dottyback typically grows to a maximum size of 8 cm (3.1 in). It has an elongated body with a pointed snout and a large head. The body is blue with a distinctive yellow dorsal stripe running from the mouth to the tail, giving it a sunrise-like appearance.

Diet and Feeding

The Sunrise Dottyback is carnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans and zooplankton. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and frozen meaty preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is semi-aggressive and territorial. Bi-directional sex change has been confirmed for this species. It has been reared in captivity.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 20 gallons with abundant live rock for hiding. It is considered reef-safe. It should be kept singly or in established pairs. Captive-bred specimens are available.
