The Bicolor Dottyback (Pictichromis paccagnellae), also known as the Royal Dottyback or Bicolor Damsel, is a species of dottyback from the Indo-Pacific. It is a popular aquarium fish known for its striking two-tone coloration.

Distribution and Habitat

The Bicolor Dottyback is found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around Indonesia and the Philippines. It inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas at depths of 5 to 30 meters.

Physical Description

The Bicolor Dottyback reaches a maximum size of approximately 7 cm (2.8 in). It has a striking two-tone coloration with the front half of the body being bright purple to magenta and the rear half being bright yellow. This sharp color division gives the species its common name.

Diet and Feeding

The Bicolor Dottyback is carnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and frozen meaty preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is semi-aggressive and territorial, particularly toward similar-looking fish. It is a sequential hermaphrodite. It prefers to stay near the bottom of the tank and hides in crevices.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 20 gallons with abundant live rock for hiding. It is considered reef-safe. It should be kept singly as it can be aggressive toward conspecifics.
