The Captive-Bred Purple Fridmani Dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani), also known as the Orchid Dottyback or Fridman’s Dottyback, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Pseudochromidae. It was first formally described in 1968 by the German ichthyologist Klausewitz. The specific name fridmani honours the Israeli ichthyologist David Fridman. This species is one of the most popular and recognisable dottybacks in the marine aquarium hobby, prized for its vibrant purple coloration and relatively peaceful disposition.

Distribution and Habitat

The Purple Fridmani Dottyback is endemic to the Red Sea, where it occurs from the Gulf of Aqaba southward to the Gulf of Aden. It is found in shallow coral reef environments, typically at depths ranging from 2 to 60 metres. The species favours vertical reef walls, ledges, and overhangs with numerous small crevices and holes, which it uses as shelter and hunting positions. Unlike many other dottyback species, P. fridmani is often observed in loose colonies near vertical structures, where individuals dart out to feed on passing zooplankton before retreating to their shelters.

Physical Description

This is a small, laterally compressed fish that attains a maximum total length of approximately 6.3 cm (2.5 in). The body is uniformly vivid purple to magenta in colour, with a distinctive dark stripe running diagonally from the eye to the lower operculum. The dorsal fin is continuous and elongate, with a faint darker margin. Males and females are sexually dichromatic, with males typically displaying a more intense and uniform purple coloration, while females may show a slightly paler hue. A key diagnostic feature distinguishing P. fridmani from the similar Purple Dottyback (P. porphyreus) is the presence of the dark facial stripe, which is absent in the latter species.

Diet and Feeding

The Purple Fridmani Dottyback is a carnivorous mesopredator. In the wild, it feeds primarily on small zooplankton, copepods, amphipods, and other tiny crustaceans that it captures in the water column near its shelter. In the aquarium, it readily accepts a variety of meaty foods, including brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen and pellet preparations. It will also consume bristleworms, making it a useful addition for pest control in reef aquaria. Captive-bred specimens are particularly well-adapted to accepting prepared foods.

Behavior and Reproduction

Pseudochromis fridmani is a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning individuals can change sex from female to male. The species is generally observed in loose colonies in the wild, with males maintaining small territories near vertical reef structures. In the aquarium, it can be territorial, particularly towards similar-looking fish or other dottybacks, but is generally less aggressive than many of its congeners. Captive-bred pairs can be maintained successfully if introduced simultaneously. The species is a demersal spawner, with males guarding egg masses deposited in crevices. Captive breeding programmes have been highly successful, and captive-bred specimens are widely available.

Aquarium Care

The Purple Fridmani Dottyback is well-suited to reef aquariums and is considered one of the easiest dottybacks to keep. A tank of at least 75 litres (20 gallons) with ample live rock providing crevices and hiding places is recommended. The species is reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates, though it may prey on small ornamental shrimp. Water parameters should be maintained at tropical marine levels, with a temperature of 24-26°C (75-79°F), pH of 8.1-8.4, and specific gravity of 1.020-1.025. Captive-bred specimens are hardier and more disease-resistant than wild-caught individuals and are preferred for aquariums.

Conservation Status

Classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The Purple Fridmani Dottyback is endemic to the Red Sea but is locally common throughout its range. It occurs within several marine protected areas, and there are no major threats identified for the species. The availability of captive-bred specimens further reduces pressure on wild populations, making this species a sustainable choice for the aquarium hobby.
