Distribution and Habitat

Physical Description

The Golden Semilarvatus Butterflyfish is a large and striking species with a predominantly yellow body marked with blue vertical lines. It has a distinctive blue cheek pattern. The fish is known to occasionally hover in a stationary position for long periods beneath ledges of plate corals of the genus Acropora.

Diet and Feeding

In the wild, the Golden Semilarvatus Butterflyfish feeds on hard corals as well as benthic invertebrates. In captivity, it should be offered a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, frozen preparations, and marine algae. Its coral-eating habit makes it challenging to keep in reef tanks.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is one of the few fish species known to have long-term mates. It is frequently recorded in pairs or in small shoals. It is an oviparous species which forms pairs when spawning. The fish are normally active during the day and emerge at night.

Aquarium Care

The Golden Semilarvatus Butterflyfish requires a tank of at least 100 gallons with excellent water quality and abundant live rock. It is peaceful but its coral-eating habits make it unsuitable for reef tanks. It is recommended for experienced aquarists due to its specialized dietary needs.
