The Pakistan Butterflyfish (Chaetodon collare), also known as the Red-tailed Butterflyfish, Brown Butterflyfish, or Pakistani Butterflyfish, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Chaetodontidae. It is found in the Indo-West Pacific region.

Distribution and Habitat

The Pakistan Butterflyfish is found in the Indo-West Pacific region. It shares the robust habitus and bold habits of its close relatives, the raccoon butterflyfish (C. lunula) and the mailed butterflyfish (C. reticulatus).

Physical Description

The Pakistan Butterflyfish has a distinctive appearance with a predominantly dark body and a reddish-brown to black tail. It has a pattern that is entirely different from its close relatives but shares the robust body shape and bold behavior. The mailed butterflyfish (C. reticulatus) is a near-match in appearance, save for a less brown hue and light blue instead of red in its black-based tail. This species reaches a maximum total length of approximately 18 cm (7.1 in).

Diet and Feeding

The Pakistan Butterflyfish feeds primarily on coral polyps and small benthic invertebrates. In captivity, it should be offered a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and frozen meaty preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is typically found in pairs or small groups. It is an oviparous species that forms pairs for breeding.

Aquarium Care

The Pakistan Butterflyfish requires a tank of at least 55 gallons with stable water conditions and abundant live rock. It is semi-aggressive and may display territorial behavior. It may nip at corals, so it is not considered reef-safe.
