The Yellow Goatfish (Mulloidichthys vanicolensis), also known as the Yellowfin Goatfish or Golden Goatfish, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Mullidae. It was first formally described in 1831 by Georges Cuvier. The specific name vanicolensis refers to Vanikoro Island in the Solomon Islands where the type specimen was collected.

Distribution and Habitat

The Yellow Goatfish is widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian Islands and French Polynesia, north to southern Japan and south to northern Australia. It inhabits coral reefs and adjacent sandy areas at depths from 1 to 100 meters. It is commonly found in large schools on reef flats and slopes.

Physical Description

The Yellow Goatfish reaches a maximum total length of 38 cm (15 in). The body is elongated and somewhat compressed. The overall coloration is yellow to golden-yellow with a paler underside. A yellow stripe may run along the body from the eye to the caudal fin. The barbels on the chin are yellow and relatively short. The dorsal fin has two parts: the first with 8 spines and the second with 1 spine and 8 soft rays. The caudal fin is forked.

Diet and Feeding

The Yellow Goatfish is a benthic carnivore that uses its barbels to probe the sand for small invertebrates, including crustaceans, worms, and small mollusks. It often forages in schools, with individuals taking turns to probe the substrate. In the aquarium it accepts a variety of meaty foods including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is highly social and is typically found in large schools. It is diurnal and actively forages during the day. At night it may rest on the substrate or in crevices. Reproduction involves pelagic spawning where eggs and sperm are released into the water column in large groups.

Aquarium Care

The Yellow Goatfish requires a tank of at least 75 gallons with a sandy substrate for foraging and plenty of swimming space. It should be kept in groups of at least 3-4 individuals. It is generally reef-safe but may disturb sand-dwelling invertebrates. Water temperature should be maintained between 72-82 F (22-28 C) with pH 8.1-8.4 and dKH 8-12.

Conservation Status

Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
