Physical Description

This coral features a thick fleshy stalk topped by broad flattened lobes that resemble an open umbrella. Its surface is covered with numerous small retractile polyps that extend during the day, providing a velvety texture. As part of its natural cleaning cycle, it periodically sheds a waxy outer film to slough away accumulated debris and algae.

Distribution and Habitat

Native to the warm tropical reefs of Indonesia and the wider Indo-Pacific, Sinularia sp. occupies a diverse array of marine environments. It thrives along shallow reef flats, lagoons, and upper reef slopes where clear waters allow ample sunlight penetration.

Lighting and Flow Requirements

It flourishes under moderate lighting conditions provided by modern T5 or LED aquarium fixtures. Moderate and indirect water flow is necessary to support tissue respiration and assist the coral during its periodic shedding process.

Feeding and Nutrition

The majority of its energy is obtained through photosynthesis via symbiotic zooxanthellae housed within its tissues. It also absorbs dissolved organic matter from the water column and benefits from occasional feedings of microplankton, baby brine shrimp, and phytoplankton.

Placement and Compatibility

Given its adaptability, this coral may be positioned in any section of the aquarium that receives adequate light and water motion. It maintains a peaceful disposition toward other sessile organisms but produces mild terpenes, so running activated carbon is recommended when housing it alongside sensitive stony corals.
