The Spotted Boxfish (Ostracion meleagris), also known as the Black Boxfish, Ornate Boxfish, or White-spotted Boxfish, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Ostraciidae.

Distribution and Habitat

The Spotted Boxfish is found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It occurs on reefs at depths of 1 to 30 meters.

Physical Description

The Spotted Boxfish grows to a length of 25 cm (9.8 in). Males and females differ in colour: males are blackish on the back with white spots and have bluish sides with bright yellowish bands and spots. Females and juveniles are dark brown to blackish with white spots.

Diet and Feeding

The Spotted Boxfish feeds on sponges, worms, tunicates, and other small invertebrates. In captivity it accepts a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and frozen preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is generally peaceful but can release toxic mucus when stressed.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 55 gallons. It is not considered reef-safe as it may nip at corals and invertebrates.

Conservation Status

Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
