Physical Description

This octocoral develops a thick central stalk that divides into numerous slender, spaghetti-like branches. The colony features attractive shades of soft green, tan, or golden brown dotted with tiny retractile polyps. It may periodically contract and shed a waxy outer film to cleanse itself of settled organic debris.

Distribution and Habitat

Sinularia sp. is native to diverse Indo-Pacific coral reef zones, with robust populations found throughout Indonesian coastal waters. It populates habitats ranging from bright shallow reef flats to deeper turbid channels.

Lighting and Flow Requirements

Moderate lighting supports robust photosynthetic activity and deep tissue coloration. Moderate water flow is crucial to assist the coral in sloughing its periodic waxy coating and preventing sediment accumulation.

Feeding and Nutrition

It relies heavily on symbiotic zooxanthellae for nourishment, though it actively absorbs dissolved organic compounds and ingests fine suspended marine foods from the water column.
