The Red Cynarina Coral is a solitary LPS coral scientifically cataloged as Cynarina lacrymalis. Renowned among reef hobbyists for its luminous ruby and crimson tones, it showcases an inflated fleshy dome over a solitary skeleton. It brings extraordinary color and architectural beauty to lower-light reef aquariums.

Distribution and Habitat

Occurring broadly throughout the Indo-Pacific realm, this coral lives in sheltered marine environments across tropical coastlines. It favors turbid inner reefs, deep channels, and sandy substrate bases sheltered from heavy wave action. Such locations provide the calm water conditions needed for solitary polyps to flourish.

Physical Description

The solitary polyp develops a thick, semi-translucent mantle shaded in deep red and scarlet hues. When inflated, its tissue balloons outward to reveal the radial structure of the primary skeletal septa underneath. At night, short feeding tentacles extend from around the central mouth opening.

Diet and Feeding

It derives vital nutrition from the photosynthetic products of symbiotic zooxanthellae algae housed within its cells. Direct supplemental feedings of enriched mysis, copepods, and small marine meaty foods accelerate tissue regeneration. Feeding once or twice weekly in low flow yields optimal growth and color retention.

Behavior and Reproduction

This solitary coral maintains a non-aggressive temperament and lacks long stinging sweepers that threaten neighbors. In the natural ocean, it reproduces by releasing gametes during coordinated annual spawning cycles. In captivity, it does not bud or branch, persisting as a solitary specimen.

Aquarium Care

Careful placement on a sandy substrate is crucial to prevent the delicate inflated mantle from tearing against rocks. Low to moderate indirect lighting alongside slow, gentle water flow will prevent tissue retraction. Consistent water chemistry with balanced calcium and alkalinity supports its thick calcium carbonate skeleton.

Conservation Status

This species faces ongoing global reef threats such as ocean acidification and habitat loss. Nevertheless, wild populations remain broad and resilient throughout major reef zones. Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
