The Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus) is a slender requiem shark of the family Carcharhinidae, found on Indo-Pacific coral reefs. It is easily recognized by the white tips on its first dorsal and caudal fins. A calm methodical hunter that rests by day, it is a favoured exhibit species.
Distribution and Habitat
The Whitetip Reef Shark is distributed across the tropical Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea to the central Pacific including Hawaii. It inhabits coral reefs, reef slopes, and sandy areas, resting in caves at depths of 2 to 40 meters. It shows strong site fidelity.
Physical Description
The Whitetip Reef Shark has a slender cylindrical body with a short blunt snout and large prominent eyes. Its colour is grey to grey-brown above, pale below, with white tips on the first dorsal and tail. It reaches 213 cm (84 inches).
Diet and Feeding
The Whitetip Reef Shark is a carnivore that feeds on small reef fish, crustaceans, and octopus. It hunts at night, probing crevices within the reef. In captivity it is fed whole fish, squid, and shellfish on a predictable schedule.
Behavior and Reproduction
The Whitetip Reef Shark is nocturnal and rests by day on sand or in caves, sometimes in groups. Because it breathes by buccal pumping it can remain stationary. Reproduction is viviparous, with females producing litters of live pups in reef nurseries.
Aquarium Care
The Whitetip Reef Shark requires at least 3000 gallons (11356 L) with extensive caves and open swimming space. Water temperature should be 72-79 F (22-26 C). It is maintained by public aquariums and is not reef safe or suitable for home use.
Conservation Status
Classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN Red List.
