The Shark Egg (Chiloscyllium sp.) is a leathery egg case containing a developing carpet shark embryo, supplied as an educational and fascinating display. Also known as a mermaid’s purse, it offers a unique window into the early life of a cat shark. With proper care, observers can watch the embryo hatch.

Distribution and Habitat

Shark Eggs of this type originate from carpet sharks of the genus Chiloscyllium, found throughout the Indo-Pacific. The parent species inhabit coral reefs, lagoons, and sandy bottoms, where females deposit tough egg cases among rocks and seaweed.

Physical Description

The Shark Egg is a rigid leathery brown-to-amber rectangular capsule with curled tendrils that anchor it to algae or rock. Inside the translucent case, the developing embryo and yolk sac are visible, and gill filaments and fins appear as it matures. It hatches into a fully formed miniature shark.

Diet and Feeding

The Shark Egg is a self-contained nursery in which the embryo feeds entirely on its large yolk sac until hatching. Water is circulated over its gills through the case, and the yolk is consumed over several weeks with no external feeding required.

Behavior and Reproduction

Shark Eggs hatch after several weeks of incubation, with warmer water accelerating development. When ready, the juvenile breaks free and emerges as an independent fully formed shark beginning its benthic life as a miniature of the adult.

Aquarium Care

Prior to hatching, the egg needs a stable marine environment at 72-78 F (22-26 C) with gentle water movement. Once hatched, the juvenile requires at least 180 gallons (681 L) with deep fine smooth sand and sheltered areas. Careful handling of the delicate egg is essential.
