The Scooter Blenny (Synchiropus ocellatus), also known as the Ocellated Dragonet or Scooter Dragonet, is a species of dragonet from the Indo-West Pacific. Despite its common name it is not a true blenny.

Distribution and Habitat

The Scooter Blenny is found in the Indo-West Pacific, from Japan to the Central Pacific. It inhabits coral reefs and sandy bottoms at depths of 1 to 20 meters.

Physical Description

The Scooter Blenny reaches a maximum size of approximately 9 cm (3.5 in). It has a mottled brown and white body with red highlights. Males have larger more elaborate dorsal fins than females. The body is covered with small spots and patterns that provide camouflage.

Diet and Feeding

The Scooter Blenny is carnivorous, feeding primarily on copepods and other small benthic invertebrates. In captivity it requires a well-established tank with abundant copepod populations or frequent feedings of live foods.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is peaceful and bottom-dwelling. Males display their large dorsal fins to attract females. It is a peaceful community fish that spends most of its time on the substrate.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 30 gallons with abundant live rock and a well-established copepod population. It is considered reef-safe. It can be difficult to feed in captivity and may require live foods such as copepods.
