The Yellowtail Damselfish (Chrysiptera parasema), also known as the Yellowtail Blue Damsel or Goldtail Demoiselle, is a saltwater species of fish from the Indo-Pacific.

Distribution and Habitat

The Yellowtail Damselfish is found in the Indo-Pacific. It prefers densely populated coral groupings in sheltered lagoons and inshore reefs at depths between 1 and 16 meters.

Physical Description

The Yellowtail Damselfish is a small marine fish that reaches 7.1 to 7.6 cm (2.8 to 3 in) in length. It has a spiny dorsal fin and is laterally compressed. It is blue with a distinctive yellow caudal fin (tail fin).

Diet and Feeding

The Yellowtail Damselfish is omnivorous. In nature it feeds on plankton, algae, and small benthic crustaceans. In captivity it shows a preference for spirulina, flake foods, and mysis shrimp.

Behavior and Reproduction

Adults are usually found alone or in pairs while juveniles are more likely to remain in small groups. Males have their own territories near nesting sites. Males are responsible for guarding the eggs. This species is less aggressive than most damselfish but can be territorial with members of its own species.

Aquarium Care

It is a popular fish in the saltwater aquarium hobby and is often recommended for novice marine aquarium keepers. It requires a tank of at least 30 gallons with abundant live rock and hiding spots. It is considered reef-safe. It prefers peaceful tank mates. In a properly maintained tank it will live for 4 to 6 years or longer up to 15 years.
