The Copperband Butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus), also known as the Beaked Coral Fish, is found in reefs in both the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is one of the three species that make up the genus Chelmon, all of which have long beaks.

Distribution and Habitat

The Copperband Butterflyfish is found in the Indo-Pacific region. It occurs at depths of 1 to 25 meters either alone or in pairs. It is usually found on coral reefs or rocky shorelines, and also in estuaries and silty inner reefs. This species is territorial.

Physical Description

The Copperband Butterflyfish appears taller than its length due to its compressed, deep-bodied form with a long dorsal and posterior fins. It has vertical yellow stripes on a white background. The snout is long and slender, and the dark eye of the fish is less conspicuous than the dark eye-spot on the dorsal fin. The base of the tail features a dark band that runs perpendicular to the tail. It can grow to 20 cm (8 in) but is usually smaller in home aquaria.

Diet and Feeding

The Copperband Butterflyfish preys on tube worms, substrate worms, clams, mollusks, and small crustaceans. In captivity, it accepts a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and frozen preparations. It is also known to consume Aiptasia and Majano sea anemones, making it beneficial for pest control.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species forms monogamous pairs during breeding. It is territorial and oviparous, scattering pelagic eggs in open water.

Aquarium Care

The Copperband Butterflyfish requires a tank of at least 75 gallons with excellent water quality and plenty of live rock to graze on. It can be considered reef-safe. This species is not recommended for inexperienced aquarists as it requires excellent tank conditions to thrive or even survive. It does well at a normal reef temperature range of 75 to 84 F (24 to 29 C).
