The Sailfin Blenny (Salarias fasciatus) is another common name for the Lawnmower Blenny, a benthic marine fish species endemic to Australasia. Despite being known as the lawnmower blenny due to its propensity to consume algae growth in aquaria, it is principally a detritivore with plant material making up only about 15 percent of its diet.

Distribution and Habitat

The Sailfin Blenny is found in reefs at depths of 0 to 8 meters from East Africa and the Red Sea to Samoa and the Islands of Micronesia. It is most often found on shallow reef flats that have heavy algae cover.

Physical Description

The Sailfin Blenny is typically olive to brown with dark bars and a large number of round or elongated white spots. It reaches a maximum length of 14 cm (5.5 in).

Diet and Feeding

The Sailfin Blenny is principally a detritivore that also consumes algae. In captivity it readily accepts a varied diet including spirulina, marine algae, and frozen preparations.

Behavior and Reproduction

This species is peaceful and generally reef-safe.

Aquarium Care

It requires a tank of at least 30 gallons with abundant live rock for grazing and perching.
