Distribution and Habitat
The Yellow Finger Gorgonian (Gorgonia sp.) is indigenous to the tropical marine reefs of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, the Bahamas, and the West Indies. In nature, it inhabits deep reef slopes, vertical cliffs, and shaded surge channels at depths between 12 and 40 meters. It establishes itself on exposed rock ridges where robust laminar and turbulent ocean currents deliver a rich supply of planktonic nourishment to sessile filter feeders in undisturbed ocean environments.
Physical Description
This octocoral features robust, finger-like vertical branches supported by a fibrous gorgonin skeleton, forming an architectural upright bush or candelabra structure. The tissue is a brilliant golden-yellow, bright canary yellow, or warm orange, adorned with hundreds of contrasting pure white or translucent polyps. When fully extended, the polyps give the yellow branches a fuzzy, crystalline texture that catches the light beautifully within the aquarium canopy.
Diet and Feeding
Being an azooxanthellate species lacking photosynthetic dinoflagellates, the Yellow Finger Gorgonian depends exclusively on heterotrophic particle filtration. It feeds on micro-zooplankton, marine snow, rotifers, phytoplankton, and dissolved organic proteins. Daily broadcast or spot feedings with specialized micro-plankton suspensions and marine snow formulations are required to sustain its metabolic vitality and promote polyp expansion in closed aquarium environments.
Behavior and Reproduction
Exhibiting a completely peaceful demeanor, the Yellow Finger Gorgonian will not harm nearby sessile reef organisms. It relies on regular sloughing of its outer mucosal layer to eliminate settled detritus and unwanted microalgae spores. In nature, reproduction occurs through mechanical branch fragmentation as well as sexual release of planulae into open water during synchronized spawning events on coral reefs governed by lunar phases.
Aquarium Care
Requiring expert care, this gorgonian thrives under vigorous, high water flow that keeps its branches clean and delivers suspended food. Place it high in the aquarium in low to moderate lighting conditions (30 to 80 PAR) to avoid light-induced algae contamination. Water parameters should be maintained at 74 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit, salinity 1.024 to 1.026, alkalinity 8 to 11 dKH, calcium 400 to 440 ppm, and magnesium 1300 to 1350 ppm.
Conservation Status
Classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, Gorgonia species are protected under CITES Appendix II controls. Sustainable collecting and advancements in non-photosynthetic aquarium maintenance support ongoing species conservation and reef protection worldwide without depleting natural ocean reefs in tropical marine habitats.
