The Purple Tube Anemone (Cerianthus sp.) is an elegant tube-dwelling invertebrate known for its dramatic purple tentacle crown. It resides within a self-constructed fibrous tube buried in the sand bed. Its low maintenance requirements and vivid coloration make it popular among marine hobbyists.

Distribution and Habitat

This species is broadly distributed across tropical marine habitats of the Indo-Pacific. It naturally thrives in tranquil bays, soft sandy reef flats, and sheltered silty slopes. These sheltered areas allow the anemone to anchor safely away from heavy surge.

Physical Description

This compact invertebrate displays a gorgeous crown of deep purple tentacles radiating from an oral disc. Its elongated body is housed within a flexible sheath crafted from mucus and sand. The outer tentacles trap food while inner tentacles surround the mouth.

Diet and Feeding

Lacking symbiotic algae, this species depends completely on capturing organic particles and plankton. In captivity, it thrives on regular offerings of mysis shrimp and liquid invertebrate foods. Targeted feeding several times per week ensures strong growth.

Behavior and Reproduction

This peaceful tube anemone remains stationed within its sand burrow without wandering onto rockwork. Upon sensing physical disturbance, it pulls its tentacle crown into the tube for defense. It does not harm neighboring corals when given modest clearance.

Aquarium Care

Caring for this species is easy when provided with a deep layer of fine sand substrate. Low to moderate lighting combined with gentle water flow prevents tentacle irritation.

Conservation Status

Populations of Cerianthus species are abundant throughout their wide Indo-Pacific range. Regulated collection for the aquarium trade supports stable wild numbers. Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
